Near Perfect Bags

Ortleibs Bike Packer Plus panniers are the closest thing to a perfect all-around carry-all.Pros:-waterproof-hold 20 liters each bag-clip on and off rack very easily-comes as a basic big bag with internal zippable mesh pocket and external pressure-close waterproof pocket.These can be augmented with-added purchase option: more external pockets of either mesh or waterproof variety, as well as-added purchase option: water bottle carriers.-added purchase option: There is also an internal optional laptop case.-added purchase option: backpack shoulder straps convert the bag into a roomy and comfortable backpack. Straps can be rolled and stowed in bag when not used.-added purchase option: small security cable for securing bag to bike lock when bag used as a pannier.-Red, yellow, beige, and black color optionsCons-Much more expensive compared to other panniers. Must rationalize added cost with superiority of mounting system, useability as a backpack and availability of additional storage options.-Bottom rack clamp on QL2 locking system is easy to lose. Bottom clamp is suseptable to not tightening back sufficiently once off the rack to keep from loosening and dropping off. Costs $10 to replace. If you buy a pair of Bike Packers, get in the habit of taking the bottom clamp completely off and stow in bag pocket when the bag is not on the bike. The QL3 system on some other Ortlieb models fixes this problem.Conclusion:Well-made, versatile, but very expensive pannier/backpack bags with some minor design annoyances.
