Continental 0118498 Grand Prix 4000-700 x 23 Black and Transparent Tire with Black Chili is one of the few tires that miraculously delivers on all fronts. For the colored Grand Prix 4000 tires, the activated silica compound improves the handling at stability limits and gives great rolling resistance. The anti-tear formula in the rubber compound prevents tread brittleness while increasing mileage performance. Xirallic colors give your machine a look of stylish elegance. The extra special thing about the GP 4000 and GP 4000S is their puncture protection made from Vectran liquid crystal fibers. The patented Vectran Breaker reconciles the conflicting goals of low weight, low rolling resistance and top puncture and cut resistance in a fascinating manner. The material is extremely tear and cut resistant and is also flexible. It retains these properties even under constant stress. The new Black Chili material incorporates rubber compound particles roughly ten times smaller than what is typically used in bicycle tires. This creates a denser rubber, without adding more material. Denser rubber increases a tires ability to conform to the road, while also increasing durability. The Black Chili compound is also more resistant to UV rays, which contribute to cracking and premature tire wear. The Grand Prix tires also come equipped with tire wear indicators so the rider knows when to swap out tires. I am now using my third set of these tires. Two of the previous four were good for four thousand miles. The other two suffered catastrophic glass cuts that could not be "fixed". I rarely have been able to ride more than about 1500-2000 miles on previous road tires, so am ecstatic about the durability of these GP4000s. I wouldn't buy any other tire now.

This listing is misleading. Check the various choices to make sure you are getting the Black Chili version of this tire. If you look at Continental's web site they show that not all GP4000 tires have the Black Chili compound which they claim has significant advantages over non-Black Chili versions. Whoever listed this maybe trying to dupe you into choosing something you don't want.I've owned both GP4000 and GP4000S. The GP4000S all have Black Chili and I'd say they performed better than those without the compound, wearing longer. It's difficult to judge if they corner better or provide lower rolling resistance as much of that depends on the skill and fitness of the rider but I have a running joke with the friend I ride with, "40 Percent Lower Rolling Resistance Baby!" so even if they don't, I still get to brag.4 Stars for the product (if they weren't so expensive, I give them 5); 0 stars for the listing as I think they're trying to pull a fast one.

I am a huge fan of these tires. Mine have a little over 2,000 miles on them right now without a problem. Once I was on a bike path laid over a former railroad line with the old rocks on each side. If you have seen those sharp edged things surrounding tracks before you know you would never want to ride over them on any tire. One day I was run off the path and went downhill through 25-30ft of those rocks before coming to a stop. No tears, cuts or loss of air. Amazing. 215lbs pushing into sharp rock should pop most tires.These are also amazingly supple. I have enjoyed the road feel of the Michelin Pro Race 2's for years, but found the durability and price of the Pro Race 3's to be questionable. The Contintental's give an equal, if not better, road feel and impressive puncture resistance to the Pro Race 2's. I have been running a pair of yellows so they are not the Black Chili S compound. I would like to try the S version, but my Giant looks way too sweet in yellow. These will be my tires as long as I have that bike.Color match your bike, love the feel, enjoy the extra protection and look forward to many more miles than you would get out of most tires!
