I already have Michelin World Tours on two of my Schwinn Collegiates and a Raleigh. They handle well on sand or gravel roads. They also seem to have better traction over sand on paved roads. For example, I have Continental City Rides (a more expensive tire) on a matching Schwinn Collegiate with 590 rims. There is a road I ride over daily which has a sandy patch, and it always feels like the Continentals are sliding. Sometimes it scares me, but the Michelins feel very steady there! Very good traction on wet roads, too. The tread pattern also looks much more appropriate for my 1960's and 70's bikes. These tires have a slightly larger profile than some, that can be trouble when coping with the tight fit on Schwinns with fenders, such a Schwinn Suburban. These tires are 630-32; yet compared to Kenda 630-32 the Michelins are an eigth of an inch wider! Pudgy like me! Under $20 each, a great deal for a great name in tires. There are lots of choices for your 27" rims, but I recommend these.

These tires ride great, but are wider than any other 27 x 1 1/4 tires I have. I have a bike with fenders, and the width difference between these and my old tires meant that they rubbed. I adjusted the rear fender as high as it could go and stopped the top rubbing, but still experienced slight rubbing where the fender attaches to the kickstand bracket.

I've ridden on the gumwall 1 1/4 World Tour tires for about 1500 miles so far on my touring bike. Normally run at about 90 psi with my bike unloaded, they're not a quick tire (but it's not a quick bike), but the rolling is quite comfortable. When I tour (~30 lbs front/back), I pump the rear to about 95 psi. They've held up fine. Considering wear on the rear, it will last about 2000 to 2500 miles. I have flatted only twice, once on a sidewall puncture, once in the tread. The sidewall was torn slightly, and I've booted it with duct tape and a tube patch (touring, remember). I've left it that way, and there have been no problems. Overall, I'd say that you will get decent performance for the low price.The gumwall look is very compatible with an older bike like mine. I prefer the retro appearance, so that's a plus. You won't be disappointed, but don't expect high-price tire performance without paying the, em..., high price.
