By RheaK
These so-called city bags are a major pain to get into and out of and I would not recommend them for urban bicyclists. I bought these bags to bike commute and grocery shop in the city. You might think that for such a prodigious price tag, the tops would roll easily and the clips would work smooth as a dream. Not so! It is awkward and time-consuming to roll and fasten these things, especially wearing gloves. Why not a zipper?? Or at least clips that work the first time I try to clip them?I thought the simple, one-compartment design might be helpful, but wrong again. I miss the extra pocket I had in my Axiom tandem bags that cost 1/3 as much as these do. These Ortliebs offer no way to store small tools or items that you would like quick access to, like a metro card, phone, keys, or wallet. These bags might be useful for a multi-day bicycling trip in the rain, I'll give them that. They also stay fixed on my rear rack without falling off or rattling. They do carry a large volume of stuff. But over all, they are difficult to use and a terrible value for urban bikers.

By 5edtycg
I have owned these bags for about 6 months. Preparing to commute to work, I wanted a large bag/set of bags that would hold daily equipment and rain gear as well. I had many questions as I was planning to partially convert a Specialized Rockhopper (no rear suspension) to a work commuter. After an exhaustive search, I found the Ortleibs to be large, durable, and without having the need for a separate rain cover, always waterproof. This was a big plus as I often carry electronics. I also wanted a system that was fast on and off, and ready to go when I was, and the back-rollers fit the bill.I paired it with a Blackburn Mtn Rack. I have disc brakes, but bought the model for regular v-brakes. The fit was tight, and my LBS recommended a spacer between the frame and rack in order to clear the back brake mechanism. It worked without the spacer, but my heal hit the bags and the spacer allowed me to tilt the rack back far enough to remedy the situation. The LBS guy put on a nut from a presta valve and presto!I also have a heavy weight ulock,, the Kryptonite Evolution Series 4, velcroed to the top surface of the rack. The rack holds the lock on top, and the bags on the side without interfering one another. They can be removed, added in any order.Only issues: The closures took a few days to get used to, and I kind of wished I'd gone for the next model up which uses only one closure, but not a problem and now that they're mine they're old hat and I wouldn't want them any other way. The bags have no inner compartments, so it's sometimes hard to find things, but if you'll use bags or containers for small stuff, you'll find them easily by feel. Also, after you become daily acquainted with your gear, you'll find it in seconds by feel alone. So, in conclusion, the Ortliebs carry everything I need, book binder, bike lights, keys, rain gear, cable (for use with ulock). They're quick on and off, great reflectivity, and perfectly waterproof, The material is rubberized canvas and thick.. And after a few awkward days of initiation, I'm 100% happy with them and would buy another pair...if ever necessary. One more thing, the rack I mentioned about stays on (sans bags) when I get back on the singletrack. It's so lightweight, it would be more of a bother to take it off. I used Locktite on all bike to rack connections and have never heard a peep out of it.

By Capt Dan
This is a fairly standard roll down the top to close type bag. I got a good price but still Ortlieb bags seem over priced for what they are.The quick release handle works and I don't see a reason it should break anytime soon though it feels like standard lightweight plastic. The bag is big enough for me though it is harder to 'overload' than other bags I've used. I'd like it if there was an extension for the clip top.I also have my own shoulder strap which makes carry it easier - there was no strap included though it looks like a strap in the picture.
